THREE SHIPS – Kirsty Hannah

  • Release date: June 19, 2026

During January and February 1968, 58 men lost their lives when three trawlers out of Hull, the St Romanus, Kingston Peridot, and Ross Cleveland, went down within a month of each other.

Growing up in Grimsby, once the world’s largest fishing port, the trawling trade and its legacy form part of who you are even if you’ve had no direct experience of it. Most of my family have worked on the docks in some way, from my great, great Norwegian grandfather who jumped ship here and worked as a lumper, to my husband who now walks the same dockside paths as part of the town’s future, the renewable energy industry.

Although these songs are rooted across the river in Hull, it’s a shared past, both Hull and Grimsby lost too many men to the ‘most dangerous job on earth’ in the name of profit.

“I am going over. We are laying over. Help me. I am going over. Give my love and the crew’s love to the wives and families” – Phil Gay, skipper of the Ross Cleveland.
